  Dr Dougals Defty

Dougals Defty studied at Rhodes University from 1980 – 1983 and qualified with B.Pharm. In 1985 he joined Community pharmacy in East London and Somerset West where he spent 7 years. Following this Mr Defty joined Mediclinic Southern Africa as Pharmacy Services Executive, where he is currently still actively involved. Dougals is currently Vice-President of the South African Pharmacy Council and also in second term of office as a councilor.

He is very passionate about pharmacy, and it’s with this passion that he held office in the SA Association of Hospital and Institutional Pharmacists (SAAHIP) as branch chair and National President (2000-2001). Douglas strives to improve the standard of pharmaceutical care by empowering and encouraging training of staff. The pharmacy Human Resources shortage is of great concern. Furthermore, improving standard operating procedures is a driving force in order to ensure patient safety. His main focus is on private institutional pharmacies although he remains committed to address the concerns of all sectors in pharmacy, to the benefit of pharmacy as a whole.
