Hospital pharmacy has evolved from being mainly dispensary- based to pharmacy services at ward level and at the patient’s bedside, making pharmacists part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team caring for patients. Shirley has driven this in Life Healthcare, creating opportunities for the development of pharmacists in a clinical career path, and to support growing clinical strategies.

Current responsibilities include a strong emphasis on development of new hospital and clinical IT systems, which includes a move to electronic patient records.
Prior positions include pharmacy practice specialist and hospital pharmacy manager, and she started her pharmacy career in retail pharmacy. Her educational background includes a B Pharm degree from Rhodes University, and several management and leadership courses through Wits Business School. After qualifying as a paramedic, Shirley has done volunteer work with Johannesburg ambulance.
