Dr Owain George
New Zealand

Dr Owain George is the Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand. Owain, who is from South Wales, has a BPharm and a PhD from the University of Cardiff, Wales. He has over twenty years experience in pharmacy, including hospital, community, primary care, and most recently, regulation. He moved to New Zealand in 2005, starting work with the Pharmacy Council in late 2006. During his time at the Council he developed new intern pharmacist assessments; clinical scenario – based assessments (OSCE) and a multiple-choice questions exam, based on the Australian intern pharmacist exam. He also led the development of a continuing professional development framework, which is the basis for annual recertification of pharmacists in New Zealand. He considers that pharmacy regulators, now more than ever need to work with the industry as new services are introduced, remove unnecessary regulatory barriers to innovation, whilst assuring health consumers and patients of safe and effective pharmacy services.
